Question
Need to answer these questions for my lab report, I haven't taken orgo for 2 years and have forgottten most of it. Please help.
2. When a mixture of furan and maleic anhydride in diethyl ether is allowed to react at room temperature, the major product is the exo and not the endo adduct. Draw the structures of both products and decide whether the reaction is under thermodynamic or kinetic control. Explain your answer with the help of a energy diagram for the progress of the reaction. Your diagram should include information for both the exo and endo products.
3. The product in question 2 decomposes at its melting point while most other Diels Alder adducts with maleic anhydride do not. How do you explain. Consider your answer to question 2.
Explanation / Answer
The endo transition state is lower in energy and therefore occurs faster. This is the kinetic product.
the exo product is more stable and will be favored if the reaction is under thermodynamic control.
The reactio gave the exo product hence the reaction is thermodynamic control.
3. the product in question 2 decomposes. Since the product can easily climb down to the starting material. Since their energy level gap is very less. but other adducts of maleic anhydride will be stable, since their energy level is high.
