Question
Assume that an exhaled breath of air consists of 74.7% N2, 15.4% O2, 3.5% CO2, and 6.4%water vapor.
A) If the total pressure of the gases is 0.990atm , calculate the partial pressure of N2.
B) If the total pressure of the gases is 0.990atm , calculate the partial pressure of O2.
C) If the total pressure of the gases is 0.990atm , calculate the partial pressure of CO2.
D) If the total pressure of the gases is 0.990atm , calculate the partial pressure of water vapor.
E) If the volume of the exhaled gas is 450mL and its temperature is 37 ?C, calculate the number of moles of CO2 exhaled.
F) How many grams of glucose (C6H12O6) would need to be metabolized to produce this quantity of CO2? The chemical reaction is the same as that for combustion of C6H12O6.
Explanation / Answer
a) partial pressure of N2.= 0.747*0.99= 0.739 atm
b) partial pressure of O2= 0.154*0.99= 0.152 atm
c) partial pressure of CO2.= 0.035*0.99= 0.034 atm
d) partial pressure of water vapor.= 0.064*0.99= 0.063 atm
e) n = 0.450*1/22.4* (273/(273+ 37))* 0.035 = 0.0061 moles
f) 1 mole of glucose goves 6 moles of co2
So for 0.0061 moles of co2 we need 0.006/6 moles of Glucose = 0.001 moles of glucose.
Do mass of glucose = mass in 1 mole*0.001 = 180.157*0.001 = 0.018 gm
