Explain why, in terms of intermolecular forces, as n increases for the molecule CH3(CH2)nOH, the solubility of the molecule in hexane increases. What is the molality of a solution prepared by dissolving 18.5 g of calcium nitrite in 83.5 g of distilled water (MM = 18.02 s/mol)? I have a 17.0% by mass solution of sodium acetate, CH3COONa (MM = 82.0 8/moi) in water (MM = 18.02 s/mol). What is the molarity of this solution? The density of the solution is 1.09 s/mL.Explanation / Answer
4:- molality=moles of solute/kgs of solvent=(18.5/132.1)/0.0835=1.67 molal
5:- 17% by mass slution means 17 gms of solute in 100 gms of solvent
Molarity=moles of solute/lts of solution=(17/82)(100/1.09)*1000=2.25 molar
3:- always remember the fact that like dissolves like
as n increases the compound resembles more to hexane and thus solubility increases
in terms of inter molecular forces if n is small then the compound is small as compared to hexane and thus weak inter molecular forces exist bit when n increases compound size increases and effectively interacts with hexane and strong inter molecular forces come into play and thus increasing solubility
