Question
8. Some medical conditions are treated by injecting a watery 1 solution of sodium bicarbonate into the blood (NaHCO3). In water, sodium bicarbonate dissociates into sodium ions (Na+) and bicarbonate (Hco3-0. How would intravenous delivery of sodium bicarbonate affect the pH of blood? choose the best explanation. The image below may be helpful. O Injecting sodium bicarbonate would cause blood pH to increase. It would drive the bicarbonate equilibrium reactions to the left, favoring the formation of CO2 and H20. O Injecting sodium bicarbonate would cause blood pH to decrease. It would drive the bicarbonate equilibrium reactions to the left, favoring the formation of CO2 and H20. O Injecting sodium bicarbonate would cause blood pH to increase. It would drive the bicarbonate equilibrium reactions to the right, favoring the formation of H+ and HCO3-. O Injecting sodium bicarbonate would cause blood pH to decrease. It would drive the bicarbonate equilibrium reactions to the right, favoring the formation of H+ and HCO3-Explanation / Answer
Answer
8. Injection of sodium bicarbonate into the blood will increase the blood pH. It will drive the bicarbonate equilibrium reaction to the left favoring the formation of CO2 and H2O. following the is bicarbonate equilibrium reaction
CO2 + H2O H2CO3HCO-3 + H+
This reaction is catalyzed by carbonic anhydrase, If the concentration of bicarbonate will be higher then equilibrium will shift toward left that causes the conversion of carbonic acid to carbon dioxide and water thereby increase the blood pH. So, if sodium bicarbonate will inject into the blood then it will cause the increase in the blood pH by shifting the equilibrium to the left.
9. The binding affinity of hemoglobin to oxygen is affected by several factors e.g. Low pH, increase the concentration of 2,3 bisphosphoglycerate (2,3 BPG) and increase in the temperature will ultimately decrease the binding affinity and vice-versa.
So least binding affinity of oxygen will be in the systemic capillary in the skeletal muscles when a person is exercising because during exercise the pH will decrease in the muscles because of lactic acid production, temprature will also increasde and 2,3,BPG will also increase becasue of increase glycolysis So All the factor together will decrease the binding affinity of oxygen with hemoglobin.
