Question
Need some homework help on this. I know the three components of exception are caffeine, acetaminophen, and one other, but not sure how to fill out the table below. Please show all work so I can see how you came to your conclusions somewhat.
Rank the three principle components in Excedrin in the table below from most to Name and draw each compound. Give the pKa of each compound. Try to find published pKa values online. Caffeine's pKa is hard to find, so you'll have to approximate its pKa by using approximate pKa values for hydrogens attached to carbons of differing hybridizations. Indicate which proton is the most acidic proton for each compound by circling it. Fill in the charge and solubility chart below. Double check your notes if you're having a hard time figuring this part out. Yes, we talked about it in class. How much of each compound is in one tablet of "Extra Strength Excedrin" in mg and in mols? Show your calculation for the conversionExplanation / Answer
Acetaminophen oral solution (ie, elixir, adult liquid) has a pH of 3.8 to 6.1
Caffine has ph value of 5
Commercial Asipirin has ph value of 3.
Pka values for -:
Caffine 10.4
Acetominophen ~ 4.51
Aspirin 3.5
For calculating charge at diffrent ph
You use Hinderson equation: pH= Pka + log(-H/HA).
The net charge is determined whether each part protonates or deprotonates.
Now, keep in mind. The protonation/deprotonation DOES depend on the structure!
Other asnwers are as follows
203mg of aspirin is in tablet
14.5 mg Of caffine in tablet
325 mg Of acetaminophen in tablet
Aspirin:
No of moles of components (x) = ?
No of moles of standard = mass of s-trioxane / RMM of s-trioxane
= 0.05 / 90 = 0.000555
Component integral = 202.72
No of protons giving signal = 3
Standard integral = 200
No of protons giving signal = 6
Putting values in the above eq.1:
x / 0.000555 = (202.72/3) / (200/6)
x/0.000555 = 67.57 / 33.33
x = 67.57 x 0.000555 / 33.33
x = 0.00113 moles
Mass of aspirin = moles x RMM
= 0.00113 x 180 = 0.203g = 203mg
% w/w of aspirin in the tablet = mass of aspirin / mass of the tablet x 100
= 0.203 / 0.501 x 100
= 40.5%
Asipirin = 0.00113 moles
Caffeine:
No of moles of components (x) = ?
No of moles of standard = mass of s-trioxane / RMM of s-trioxane
= 0.05 / 90 = 0.000555
Component integral = 14.0
No of protons giving signal = 3
Standard integral = 200
No of protons giving signal = 6
Putting values in the above eq.1:
x / 0.000555 = (14.0/3) / (200/6)
x/0.000555 = 4.66 / 33.33
x = 4.66 x 0.000555 / 33.33
x = 0.0000775 moles
Mass of caffeine = moles x RMM
= 0.000075 x 194 = 0.0145g = 14.5 mg
% w/w of aspirin in the tablet = mass of aspirin / mass of the tablet x 100
= 0.0145 / 0.501 x 100
= 2.89%
Caffine = 0.0000775 moles
