Question

Determine the empirical formula of the following compound. An oxide of phosphorus that contains 43.7% phosphorus and no other element except oxygen. A compound if a 7.32 gram sample is found to contain 1.34 grams of hydrogen and no other element except carbon. A compound which is 47.7% chromium and contains no other element except fluorine. A compound if a sample is found to contain 4.90 g of copper, 1.24 g of sulfur, 1.86 g of oxygen, and no other element. A compound which is 35.0% nitrogen, 60.0 % oxygen, and 5.05 % hydrogen. A compound if a 6.00 gram sample is found to contain 1.60 g of potassium, 2.12 g of chromium, and no other element except oxygen.

Explanation / Answer

No. of moles of Cr = 47.7 / 51.9 = 0.9 and No. of moles of F = 52.3 / 18.9 = 2.7

dividing both sides by 0.9 to obtain the smallest whole no i.e 0.9/0.9 = 1 for Cr and 2.7/0.9 = 3 for F

Ratio of Cr : F is equal to 1:3

So the compound is Cr3F
