The dimethyl sulfate attacks the nitrogen sites in these nucleic acids. The DMS causes repair dependent , indirect mutagenesis within the nucleotides. The dimethyl sulfate causes the attack by an Sn2 mechanism. This occurs on the 7th carbon of the adenine moiety, I.e. Resulting in an N7 methyl adenine. Also, this can result in a 3 methyl adenine that causes mispairing of the bases. There can be a depurination of the 3-methylated adenine, which results in mutations. If the DNA pair is not repaired by the DNA polymerase, then the methylated base pair will continue to be replicated in the next cycle and result in mispairing of the DNA.

The question is very simple and to answer it there are two main points- the A-T pair and the action of DMS on it . Thus we need to consider the effects of DMS and the mutations caused by it on the A-T base pair.
