Question

Mole of Gas Lab

Discussion 1. In Part III of the procedures, you tested the apparatus for air leaks to ensure there weren't any. What error would occur if your apparatus was not airtight? How would your final value for molar volume have been affected? Be specific. 2. Why was it necessary to wait for your collected water to cool to room temperature before measuring its volume? How would your final value for molar volume have been affected if you didn't allow proper cooling? Be specific. 3. Incomplete decomposition of KClO3 is NOT a source of error in this experiment - explain why not. Be specific; generalized responses will not receive credit. Conclusion (Write a paragraph about the lab include briefly what was done, your result, were you correct and possible experimental errors (do not just state human and measurement errors as errors. Be specific, which human, which measurement ...)

Explanation / Answer

2KClO3(s) --> 2KCl(s) + 3O2(g) where MnO2 is used as the catalyst
Heating KCLO3 gives the product.
It is based on the above equation.Initial mass(KClO3)-final mass(KCl)) will give the amout of oxygen evolved.
which is then measured by the displacement of water in another beaker.Whatever will be the volume of oxygen it will displace the same amount of water.

a)If there are any leaks in the apparatus then some amount of oxygen will escape from the tube.and thus the amount of water displaced will be less than actual.Or we will get the false reading.
When we will do calculate by Initial mass(KClO3)-final mass(KCl)) we get lets suppose xgram of oxygen.
But due to leakage we get y grams.Hence there will be an error of (x-y)grams of oxygen.

Hence molar volume would have also been affected.
as molar volume=Poxygen/Ptotal As Poxygen get decrese hence does the molar volume.
Other error may be introduction of air bubbles which will again cause deviation in final result.So we try to move out the air bubbles.

b)Ptotal = Pwater + Poxygen.

At any particular temp we know the Pwater.Ptotal can be calculated by barometer.
thus Poxygen=Ptotal- Pwater can be easily calculted.Now if they are not allowed to cool then they will not have the same temperature or thus no thermal equlibrium.Thus Poxygen will be the false one.And thus the molar volume will be also affected.

c)Yes incomplete decomposition will not be a source of error as we are calculating weight of oxygen or volume via Initial mass-final mass.If KCLO3 doesn't decompose wholly then undecomposed KCLO3 will also be present in the final mass which gets cancels out by initial one.

initial=(KCLO3)
final=(KCl+undecomposed KCLO3)
