Question
I need help with Science 10:
1: In a tightly closed container, a piece of zing reacts in hydrochrloic acid to produce hydrogen gas and a salt solution of zing chloride. What will happen to the mass of the container?
A) It will increase
B) It will decrease
c) It will stay the same
D) It will fire increase, then decrease
2: Tom has an open cup of vinegar (acetic acid) and adds some sodium carbonate. The mixture bubbles and fizzes. After the fizzing stops, Tom finds the container is lighter (less mass) then it was originally. He think it has broken the law of conservation of mass. His lab parntner knows the correct answer and states:
A) "You must have made a mistake. Try it again."
B) "Yes, you found a reaction that breaks the law of conservation of mass!"
C) "There is not enough information here. We must do the experiment again"
D)"No, the law of conservation of mass is obeyed. Gas was produced, and it escaped into the surrounding air."
3: What is the colour in each of these acid-base indcators in the following solutions?
A) methyl orange in stomach acids
B)methyl orange in tomato juice
C) bromothymol blue in banana juice
D)blue litmus in pure water
E) red litmus in pure water
F) phenolphthalein in ammonia solution (NH3)
4: What is the pH of an acidic substance?
A) Between 4 and 8
B) Greater than 7
C) Less than 7
D) Equal to 7
5: A sample of grapes is crushed, and the pH is tested using three different indicators. Which set of colours is correct for the grapes?
6: You have a sample to test in a lab. The sample looks like milk. Choose the two best indicators for testing if the sample is in the same pH range as milk.
A) Litmus and phenolpthalein
B)Methyl orange and Methyl red
C) Methyl red and Bromthymol blue
D) Phenolphthalein and indigo caramine
7) A property of acids is that they react with metals. If you placed a cut lemon and a raw egg on two spots on bare metal, which of the following would you observe?
A) Only the egg would react
B)Only the lemon would react
C) Both the lemon and th egg would react
D) Neither the lemon nor the egg would react
8: A solution has a pH of 11. Acid is added until pH = 5. Which indicator would be a good choice to know when the solution has reached pH = 5?
9: A sample of bleach was tested with bromothymol blue to determine its pH. What colour will it be, and what does the colour tell you about the pH of bleach?
10:Which kind of acids react with water to form acid precipitation?
11: Which of the following reactions are written correctly?
I) HNO3 + Ba(OH)2 ? Ba(NO3)2 + H2O II) CO2 + H2O ? H2CO2 III) Li2O + H2O ? 2LiOH
12: Which of the following represents one of the reactants in the production of acid precipitation?
a) MnO2 b)SO2 c)HCLO3 d)NH3
13: When sulfuric acid and strontium hydroxide react, the ionic compound produced is
A) SrN2 B)H2O C)H2S D)SrSO4
14: Sulfurous acid would contain which of the following anions (negative ion?)
A) SO4^2- B) SO3^2- C) S2- D)HSO4^1-
15: And how many neutrons does the chlorine ion have?
because the atomic mass for chlorine is 35.5, dont you round that up to 36 and then 36-17=19neutrons, 17 protons and 18 electrons?
Also i really need help with the questions involving pH, e.g pH goes from 11 to 5, what is the best indicator to use.....because i have no idea on how to do those questions at all..
Thanks guys!!
Explanation / Answer
1. (B)
Mass will decrease as hydrogen gas will escape.
2.(D)
3.
A red
B red
C blue
D purple
E purple
F pink
4. B
5.
Grape juice with baking soda:color changes from reddish purple to bluish purple/black
Vinegar added to grape juice and washing soda soluton: color changes to reddish purple
6. C
7. B
8. A
9. B
10.
Nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides
11. B
12. B
13. D
14. B
15. Chlorine has 2 stable isotopes 35Cl (76% abundance) with 18 neutrons
and 37Cl(24% abundance) with 20 neutrons.
So 76% chlorine has 18 neutrons, which is the major component.
