Question
Concentration problem
The L.D50 for oral intake of cyanide ion is 1.52 mg/kg body weight. What equilibrium molar concentration of CN would be present in the blood serum of a male or a female who has Ingested of this amount of CN? Blood serum may be approximated to contain 8.07 g NaCI, 0.21 g KCI, 0.18 g KH2PO4, 0.28 g CaCl2 and 0.13 g MgSO4 per liter. Please note, you have to do this calculation only once for either a male or a female: the choice is yours (no judgement on this choice from me!-haha) Assumptions: All CM enters the blood serum after ingestion The CPI ingested leads to the formation of only HCN Matrix effects due to proteins and other substances may be ignored. Average weight for a mole in the United States is 87kg Average weight for a female in the United States is 74kg The volume of blood in the average male is 5.51. The volume of blood in the average female is 4.5L Be sure to include any other assumptions you makeExplanation / Answer
LD50 (Lethal Dose at which 50% population die after consumption ) for CN-= 1.52 mg/Kg.
FOR MALE:
Average Weight = 87 Kg
Average Volume of blood = 5.5 L
Then, Mass of CN- = 1.52 * 87 mg = 132.24 mg = 0.13224 g
Molecular mass of CN- = 26 g/mole
No of moles of CN- = (0.13224/26) = 0.005086 moles
So, molar concentration of CN- in blood serum = 0.005086 / 5.5 = 0.00092472 M
= 9.247 X 10-4 M
FOR FEMALE:
Average Weight = 74 Kg
Average Volume of blood = 4.5 L
Then, Mass of CN- = 1.52 * 74 mg = 112.48 mg = 0.11248 g
Molecular mass of CN- = 26 g/mole
No of moles of CN- = (0.11248/26) = 0.004326 moles
So, molar concentration of CN- in blood serum = 0.004326 / 4.5 = 0.0009613 M
= 9.613 X 10-4 M
