Question

Identify three compounds A-C based on their relative Rf values after a Thin Layer Chromatography experiment (TLC), and calculate their Rf values. Circle the solvent syste, would give the resul below. 2. In Synthesis of salicylic acid from wintergreen oil, if you started with 0.025 Moles of methyl salicylate (mw=152.1) and recovered 2.87 g of product, calculate the percent yield of salicylic acid (mw=138.1)? SHOW YOUR WORK 3 Calculate the Reaction Efficiency (RE) of a synthesis if 1.5 mmols of Iso-borneol are used, and 0.20 g of Camphor are recovered, what is the reaction efficiency? (mw of Iso-Borneols= 154.3; mw of Camphor= 152.2) (MW : Borneol = 154.3; Camphor = 152.2; Oxidant = 74.4)

Explanation / Answer

2) 1moles of methyl salicylate reacts to give 1 moles salicylic acid

hence 0.025 moles of methyl salicylate gives 0.025 moles salicylic acid

salicylic acid mass = moles x mol wt = 0.025 x 138.1 = 3.4525 gm

actual mass = 2.87 gm

% yield = ( 100 x 2.87 /3.4525) = 83.13 %

2)1 mole isoborneal gives 1mole camphor

isoborneoal reacted = 1.5mmoles , hence camphor moles = 1.5mmoles

camphor theoretical yiled = moles x mol wt = 1.5 x 10^ -3 x 152.2 = 0.2283 gm

recovered mass = 0.2 gm

% yiled = 100 x 0.2 / ( 0.2283) = 87.6 %
