Question

Solubility question: I believe adding 12M NH3 will cause the AgCL to be more soulble because it will provide more NH3 for the Ag+ ion to bond with in this reaction. The HNO3 has no common ion and the NaCl would reduce solubility as it would form more solid as Ag+ and Cl- bond. if I am correct it is between the 0.1M NH3 and the 12M NH3.

The reaction below has an equilibrium constant of 0.0030 at 298 K and 1 atm.

                                 AgCl (s) + NH3 (aq) ---> Ag(NH3)2+ (aq) + Cl- (aq)

            Which of the following processes will lead to the greatest solubility of AgCl?___________

Adding 0.1 M NH3

Adding 12 M NH3

Adding 0.1 M NaCl

Adding 12M HNO3

(Assume same amount of each reagent (in volume) is added.)

Explanation / Answer

Adding 12 M NH3
