Question
How are prosimians different from other primates? What happened to all the prosimians around the world around 40mya? Why are prosimians today confined to only Madagascar and some other isolated ecosystems? Contrast Apes and Monkeys. Discuss the key similarities and differences in morphology and behavior between the two groups, using the taxonomy laid out in your textbook. If you were given a skull only, how could you tell the difference between the two (what features would you look for, and how would they be different)? Compare modern populations with pre agricultural populations. Discuss diseases, height, overall health, longevity, and teeth. What are the most important differences in lifestyle that lead to these differences? Who is healthier? Does race exist? Why or why not? Support your discussion with data from your book or the articles assigned. Choose either the Recent African Origin, Multiregional Continuity, or Assimilation model and describe why you think it is the best model for the evolution of modem Homo Sapiens. Be sure to discuss fossil and genetic evidence in your answer. Try to imagine what humans will be like in 500,000 years. What physical traits will change in modern Homo Sapiens? Why do you think that these changes will occur-what factors will lead to the evolution of new/different traits? Think about primarily physiological changes, but you may also include social or behavioral changes as a supplement. Which of the 'four'ces of evolution will be most important for these changes as the human race continues to evolve and adapt?Explanation / Answer
The term prosimian means before simian that is pre-monkey. Prosimians include Lemurs, Lorises and Torsiers. Prosimians are primarily tree dwellers. They have longer snout than other primates which end in moist nose. Their sense of smell is very well developed. Eyes of prosimians are large and adapted for night vision. They lack stereoscopic vision and are color blind unlike other primates. The second toe of hind foot in prosimians have long claws. Most of them have 36 teeth. They spend much less time in infancy when compared to other primates.
Prosimians evolved before anthropoids and ther primates. During the course of evolution, when other primates evolved with more dominant, adaptive and intelligent features, prosimians were out hunted. In the race against other primates for food, they lost. They disappeared from almost everywhere except Madagascar and few other isolated ecosystems.
Madagascar is an island located in south-west Indian ocean about 250 miles from South African east coast. It is one of the isolated ecosystems in the world. Prosimians like lemurs are able to thrive in madagascar because no other primates inhabit the island.
