Question

During early pregnancy, the corpus luteum in the ovary is maintained in the event of a successful implantation. How does the ovary know that an implantation has occurred? The corpus luteum is maintained by chorionic gonadotropin, hormone produced only by the placenta. The hypothalamus receives neural signal that pregnancy has succeeded The ovary detects metabolites from the growth of the fetus. After fertilization, the remaining sperm produces a hormone that stimulates the corpus luteum. In the event of a successful pregnancy, the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovary negative feedback loop is shut down.

Explanation / Answer

(hCG) human chorionic gonadotropin hormone is a pregnancy hormone which signals corpus luteum that implantation has occurred. Thus, there is continued secretion of estrogen and progesterone supporting pregnancy. In case this does not happen i.e hCG does not signal corpus luteum then it degenerates, progesterone level decreases and leads to release of contents of uterus signaling a new menstrual cycle.

Thus, corpus luteum is maintained by chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone produced only by placenta.
