Question
3. In an experiment like the one you will complete, a student collected the following data. Use this information to complete the questions below. YOU MUST SHOW ALL CALCULATIONS.
Change in Mass of Anode: -0.023 g
Change in Mass of Cathode: +0.019 g
Average Current: 38.7 mA
Time of Electrolysis: 1860 s
a) Calculate the number of Coulombs passed during this experiment.
b) Calculate the number of moles of electrons passed during this experiment.
c) Calculate the number of moles of Cu2+ ions deposited.
Explanation / Answer
a) 1 amphere.sec = 1 coloumb
Q = c*t = 38.7*10^-3*1860 = 71.982 C
b) 1 electron = 1.6*10^-19 C
No of electrons in 71.982 C = 71.982/1.6*10^-19
= 4.498875*10^20 electrons
c) Cu+2 deposited at cathode
so that 1 cu+2 requires 2 electrons
No of Cu+2 Reduced = 4.498875*10^20/2 = 2.2494375*10^20 ions
No of mol of Cu+2 deposited = 2.2494375*10^20/6.023*10^23
= 3.735*10^-4 mol
