Question
This is the IR spectrum of my liquid unknown. The solibility is S - H2SO4 IS - water HCl Partially S- NaOH NaHCO3 I thought the funcional group was carboxylic acid but i'm really not sure. Can you determine what the fuctional group it is or is there any hints from the info. above? 80 60 3531.30 cm-1 847.561 1994.03 CIT-1 1905.33 cm-1 3351.68 cm-1 chald be thore proody ST 40 730 Showed 3 cm-1 20 55 cm-1 oM 062 41 om- arboxylic ado 1078.01 0 4000 3000 2000 1 Wavenumber (cm-1] Comment) Memory-18 Sample Name FTIR-4100typeA Comment Serial NumberB086361016 User Light Source Standard Detector Accumulation 6 Resclutiorn Zero Filling Apodization Gain Aperture Scanning Speed Auto (2 mm/sec) Filter Division CompanyCSUSE TGS 4 cm-1 Data Information Creation Date Data array type Horizontal Vertical Start End Data pitch 5/19/2015 10:14 AM Linear data array Wavenumber [cm-1 Cosine Auto (2) Auto (7.1 mm) %T 599.753 cm-1 4000.6 cm-1 0.964233 cm-1 3528 Auto (30000 Hz) Data pointsExplanation / Answer
The functional group is 100% carboxylic acid considering the spectrum plotted for IR curve is correct.
You can see the steep curve at the value of wavenumber 3000 which is the significant characteristics of an acid.
