Name Date Laboratory Instructor EXPERIMENT 7 Chemical Reactions and Their Classifications PRE-LABORATORY ASSIGNMENT 1. Define the following terms. a exothermic reaction b. metathesis reaction c coefficient d. chemical equation 2. Predict the product(s) of the following reactions and balance the equations Fe+O2- LiOH(aq) + H2CO,(a)- Write out the following chemical reaction in equation form. Balance the equation. Laughing gas (dinitrogen monoxide, also called nitrous oxide) can be made by heating ancmonium nitrate awith great care. Another product of the reaction is ater. (Hint: This is a decomposition reaction) 3. 79Explanation / Answer
Exothermic reaction :
Exo means given out. Thermo : heat
Def : The heat in which heat is given out is called exothermic reaction.
Example of exothermic reaction:
When hydrocarbon burns with O2 gives out heat and these are the exothermic reactions.
Metathesis reaction :
The reaction in which there is exchange in cations and anions are called as metathesis reaction :
Eg.
AX + BY ---> AY + BX
Here A and B are the cations and X and Y are anions
A and B replaces each other.
Coefficient : When we show chemical reaction , we show number of moles or molecule / atoms with each species that is called as coefficient. In chemical reaction it shows the stoichiometric equivalance. Lets discuss following general example
A+ 2B --> C
Here A has 1 coeffcient , B has 2 and C has 1
That indicate 1 mol of A react with 2 mol of B gives 1 mol C
so 1 mol A is equivalent to 2 mol B
or 1 mol A is equivalent to 1 mol C
d)
Chemical equation:
The equation shows reactants to the left side and product to the righ side of the arrow.
Chemical equation follows mass of conservation i. e. mass of reactant = mass of product
that is why it is called as equation.
Lets show an example
3H2 + N2 ---> 2NH3
H2 and N2 are reactant and NH3 is the product.
Q 2 )
Fe + O2 ---> Fe2O3
Fe has +3 charge and Oxygen has -2 and so to balance -2 by +3 Fe will be 2 and O will be 3
2 LiOH (aq) + H2CO3 (aq) ---------> Li2CO3 (a) +2 H2O (l)
Q.3
Formula for ammonium nitrate is NH4NO3
NH4NO3 --> H2O + N2O
