Question

In a study of the decomposition of nitrosyl bromide at 10 degree C NOBr NO + 1/2 Br2 the following data were obtained: Hint: It is not necessary to graph these data. The observed half life for this reaction when the starting concentration is 8.55E-2 M is s and when the starting concentration is 4.28E-2 M is s. The average delta(1/[NOBr])/delta t from t = 0 s to t = 19.7 s is M^-1 s^-1 The average delta(1/[NOBr])/ delta t from t = 19.7 s to t = 59.3 s is M^-1 s^-1 Based on these data, the rate constant for this _______ order reaction is M^-1 s^-1

Explanation / Answer

1)

The half-life period t1/2, is the time required for one-half of the original amount of material to react.

If the initial concentration is 8.55 X 10-2 M so half life period the concentration will be 4.28X10-2M .

So the observed life period is 19.7 seconds.

When the initial concentration is 4.28X10-2M the concentration at half life will be 2.14X10-2M.

So the observed life period is 59.3 seconds.
