Question

A bag of potato chips contains 585 mL of air at 35.0 C and a pressure of 775 mmHg .

Assuming the bag does not break, what will be its volume at the top of a mountain where the pressure is 428 mmHg and the temperature is 10.0 C ?

A balloon is floating around outside your window. The temperature outside is 39 C , and the air pressure is 0.700 atm . Your neighbor, who released the balloon, tells you that he filled it with 4.30 moles of gas. What is the volume of gas inside this balloon?

A 20.0 L gas cylinder is filled with 7.80 moles of gas. The tank is stored at 5 C . What is the pressure in the tank?

A 260. L kiln is used for vitrifying ceramics. It is currently operating at 1275 C , and the pressure is 0.9250 atm . How many moles of air molecules are within the confines of the kiln?

A 14.0 L gas cylinder has been filled with 7.20 moles of gas. You measure the pressure to be 3.90 atm . What is the temperature inside the tank?

Explanation / Answer

Q 1 ) A bag of potato chips contains 585 mL of air at 35.0 C and a pressure of 775 mmHg .

Assuming the bag does not break, what will be its volume at the top of a mountain where the pressure is 428 mmHg and the temperature is 10.0 C ?

solution :

V1 = 585 ml                          , V2 = ?

T1= 35 + 273 = 308K    ,          T2 = 10 +273 =283 K

P1 = 775mmHg              ,           P2 = 428 mmHg

ideal gas equation PV= nRT

           from this P1 V1 / T1 = P2 V2 / T2

                           775 x 585 / 308 = 428 x V2 / 283

                            V2= 973 ml

Volume at the top of a mountain = V2= 973 ml -------------------------(answer)

Q 2) A balloon is floating around outside your window. The temperature outside is 39 C , and the air pressure is 0.700 atm . Your neighbor, who released the balloon, tells you that he filled it with 4.30 moles of gas. What is the volume of gas inside this balloon?

solution :

T= 39 + 273 = 312K

moles = n= 4.30

pressure =P = 0.700 atm

ideal gas equation :

P V = n RT

0.700 x V = 4.30 x 0.0821 x 312

V= 157.35 L

gas inside volume = 157.35 L ------------------------------(answer)

Q 3) A 20.0 L gas cylinder is filled with 7.80 moles of gas. The tank is stored at 5 C . What is the pressure in the tank?

solution :

    PV = nRT

P = nRT / V

   =   7.80 x 0.0821 x 278 / 20

     = 8.9 atm

pressure of tank = 8.90 atm ------------------------(answer)

Q 4) A 260. L kiln is used for vitrifying ceramics. It is currently operating at 1275 C , and the pressure is 0.9250 atm . How many moles of air molecules are within the confines of the kiln?

solution :

n = PV / RT

    = 0.9250 x 260 / 0.0821 x 1548

     = 1.892

number of moles = 1.89 ------------------------(answer)

Q 5 ) A 14.0 L gas cylinder has been filled with 7.20 moles of gas. You measure the pressure to be 3.90 atm . What is the temperature inside the tank?

solution :

T = P V / n R

     = 3.9 x 14 / 7.20 x 0.0821

    = 92.36K

    = -1800C

temperature = -1800.64C -----------------------(answer)
