Question
Hi. Thank you for your help regarding this question pertaining to an extraction laboratory for organic chemistry: "1-Butnaol is water soluble. But if you add salt to an aqueous solution of 1-butanol, you can extract the 1-Butanol into dichloromethane. Explain how this works."
I reasoned that because the salt would be more soluble in the aqueous layer, 1-Butanol's solubility in the aqueous layer would be small comparativley. However, I believe I am incorrect in my reasoning and would really appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you so much :)
Explanation / Answer
Yes . you are good . your explanation correct .
'' ' the salt would be more soluble in the aqueous layer, 1-Butanol's solubility in the aqueous layer would be small comparativley '' '
here we have to consider two compounds . aqueous 1-butanol and salt.
when salt react with 1-butanol form butoxide.
ex ; the salt + 1-butanol reaction
C4H9OH + NaCl-------------------> C4H9ONa + HCl
when this mixture is placed in CH2Cl2 , organic compound soluble in dichloromethane and salt and water (salt solution) insoluble in CH2Cl2.
so two layers are formed 1) organic layer 2) inorganic layer.
the solubility of 1-butanol is more in CH2Cl2 compared to aqueous salt.
these two layers seperated .and then go for fractional distillation
in CH2Cl2 butanol-1 present . these can be seperated by fractional distillation method.
