Question
Need some help with a lab asap please.
Its a freezing point lab. 3 parts. I don't need help with calculations, just the formulas and setups. Thank you!
Part 1: I have the mass of pure naphthalene, time and temperature at which crystals first appeared, and maximum temp after crystals appeared. Need to find freezing point of the pure naphthalene.
Part 2: I have a mix of biphenyl and naphthalene, and the mass of each. I have the time and temp at which crystals first appeared, max temp after crystals appeared. I need to find the freezing point of the solution, freezing point depression, molality of the solution, and the Kf of naphthalene
Part 3: I have a mixture of an unknown compound and naphthalene and their masses, the time and temp at which crystals first appeared, max temp after crystals appeared. I need to find the freezing point of the solution, the molality of the solution, the experimental molar mass of the unknown.
Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
1) Freezing point = crystallizaiton point
2) we know that
Depression in freezing point = molality X kf
So if you have the point at which first crystal appear, so that will be melting point of the compound
3) molality = mass of solute / molecular weight of solute X mass of solvent
