Question

Print Calculator . Penodic Table 1 of 28 (1 point) × Incorrect Predict the rate law for the reaction, if the following conditions apply. NO + Br2 NOBr2 Represent unknown orders of reactants with y as the exponent. Round any decimals to the nearest integer value. Use negative exponents instead of placing a concentration in the denominator of a fraction. Exponents of 1" should not be written since the 1" is implied if there is no exponent. (a) The rate doubles when (INO] is doubled and [Br2l remains constant Rate = (b) The rate doubles when (Br2l is doubled and [NO] remains constant Rate (c) The rate increases by 1.56 times when [NO] is increased 1.25 times and (Brzl] remains constant 0 Hint Check Answer- View Sou gress: Exit Activity Activity Grade: 28 Points Possible oe@ 1

Explanation / Answer

a)
When [NO]doubles, rate doubles, sopowerof [NO] is 1
rate = k [NO] [Br2]^y

b)
When [Br2]doubles, rate doubles, sopowerof [Br2] is 1
rate = k [NO]^y [Br2]

c)
let initially rate be: rate = k [NO]1^x [Br2]1^y ..eqn 1
when [NO] is made 1.25 times previous , rate becomes1.56 times
new rate: rate2 = k [NO]2^x [Br2]^y   ...eqn 2
divide eqn 2 by eqn 1
rate2/rate1 = [NO]2^x / [NO]1^x
1.56 = (1.25)^x
take ln on both sides
ln 1.56 = ln (1.25)^x
ln 1.56 =x* ln (1.25)
x = 2

so,
rate = k [NO]^2   *[Br2]^y

d)

rate = k [NO]^-1 [Br2]^y
