Question

We have to do a pre-lab for chemistry. I was just wondering if anyone could help me with the following questions.

What are the ingredients in common home garden fertilizers? Cite the sources for your answer and justify the reliability.

How are the quantities of the ingredients reported? Cite the sources for your answer and justify the reliability.

List several experimental methods that can be used to measure the amount of phosphorus in a sample of fertilizer? Cite the sources for your answer and justify the reliability.

What is the mass percent of P in H3PO4?

Determine the average and standard deviation for the following set of numbers.

                        45.6 g, 52.1 g, and 53.8 g

Explanation / Answer

(1)

the ingredients in common home garden fertilizers are :

nitrogen : Nitrogen is used by plants for producing leaf growth and greener, lusher leaves.

phosphorous : Phosphorus is used by plant to increase fruit development and to produce a strong root system.

potassium : Potassium is used by plants for flower color and size. It is also important to the strength of the plant.

secondary nutrients : calcium , magnesium, sulfer in smaller quantites.

(3) What is the mass percent of P in H3PO4?

H3PO4 molar mass = 98 g / mol

P molar mass = 31 g / mol

mass percent of P = (mass of P / total mass of H3PO4 ) x 100

                              = (31 / 98 ) x 100

         mass percent of P   = 31.63 %

(4)

average = (45.6 + 52.1 + 53.8 ) / 3

               = 151.5/3

    average = 50.5

varience = S2 = [(45.6 - 50.5)^2 + (52.1 - 50.5)^2 + (53.8 - 50.5)^2 ] / (3-1)

                S2 = 18.73

standard deviation = S = sqrt (S2)

                               = sqrt (18.73)

   standard deviation = 4.33
