A piece of platinum metal ore obtained from "asteroid mining" was found to have mass of 573.365 grams. The density of platinum is 21.45 g/ml, what is the volume of the piece of platinum? Assuming the piece of platinum metal ore was cylindrical in shape with a diameter of 16.03 inches, what is its height? A piece of an unknown metal with a mass of 22.45 g is placed in a graduated cylinder containing water. The water levels before and after adding the sample to the cylinder are shown in the figures below. Calculate the density of the metal, and use the following information to determine the identity of the metal. Properly round off all values you calculate. Show all your workExplanation / Answer
1a. Density = (Mass/Volume)or Volume= (Mass/Density)
So Volume of the platinum piece= ( Mass of the platinum piece / Density of platinum)
= ( 573.365/21.45)ml
= 26.73 ml= 26730 cubic mm
1b. Volume of cylinder in cubic mm =* (diameter in mm )2 *(height in mm)/ (4 )
Height in mm =4* ( 26730) / ( *(407.162 )2 )
= 0.65mm
2. Volume occupied by the unknown metal = Final volume level in cylinder - Initial volume level in cylinder
= 18 ml - 9.5ml = 8.5ml
Volume = Mass / density
Density = Mass/ Volume
= 22.45 g / 8.5ml= 2.64g/ml which closely approximates to the density of aluminium.
