This morning, a nurse recorded the size of the red area on his chart, and continued to check the wound throughout the day. Now the incision is oozing a foul-smelling discharge, and the red area has doubled in size. A wound-care specialist look samples of the pus and brought them to Mandy for analysis. The Gram staining techniques is used to differentiate gram positive bacteria from that of gram negative bacteria. The gram staining procedure invilves the use of three solutions: crystal violet, decolorising agent and then counterstain which is usually safranin. The cell wall of gram positive bacteria have thick peptidoglycan layer. So it retains the primary stain during decolorising and is stained purple. The gram negative bacteria loses primary stain during decolorising and takes up secondary stain and is stained pink. Cocci are spherical bacteria and bacilli are rod shaped bacteria. Based on these informations, we can say that the organism in question is Gram -positive cocci.
