Question

Why is it important for people to understand how evolution works (including the processes that drive it such as natural selection or other microevolutionary forces)? Answer this question by referring to a specific example we covered this semester (such as the ones covered in Chapter 6 or 15, for example) and explaining in detail how an understanding of it can be beneficial or useful to an individual, or even to society as a whole. You’ll be graded on the content of your answer rather than on the length of your answer. In other words, you'll be graded on how well it demonstrates your understanding of the subject matter, whether you chose a relevant example and clearly communicated how it addresses the question and whether you put careful thought and effort into your answer. Although I don't want you to fixate on word length, as a general guideline: normally, good answers that provide enough detail are at least 250 words long.

Explanation / Answer

Evolution can be defined as process of gradual change within an organism which allow itself to adopt in changing environment with in a period of time. The evolution is continues process and never static and takes several generation, the process can be at micro bring changes in gene frequency in a population from one generation to the next and macro level the descent of different species from a common ancestor over many generations. The change or variation within the organism focuses on Mutation, Migration (Emigration and immigration), genetic drift and natural selection.

Natural selection is considered as major mechanism for microevolution within as species or population. In this process specific character of an organism supports it to adapt in certain environment and allows an organism to live and reproduce leading to inheritance to future generation. By the time change this frequency become more apparent in new generation.

Migration is a process of moving in and out of certain individuals from the population. This brings variation within that population by introduction and exit certain alleles. Because of immigration there will be introduction of new genes to the population and will pass on to next generation. Emigration causes the loss of genes form gene pool.

Mutation is change in nucleic acid of an organism, if this change occurs in sexual chromosome it will pass on to new generation. This can again bring new gene with in population or removes certain genes from population.

Mutation and migration are the factors to evolve some disease within human population also spreading from country to country. Mutation is now a days a tool for breeding new varieties. During earlier decades, pathogen were specific to their host but now because of mutation are becoming polyphagous, they are becoming resistant to certain drugs. These are the reason why people need to understand process of evolution
