Question
A) You are given a filtrate from the precipitation of calcium carbonate which contains either excess carbonate ion or excess calcium ion. Devise a simple experiment to determine which of these reagents is present in the filtrate and which one was the limiting reactant. (you do not know the original concentrations of the solutions mixed together.) your answer should not include math!!!
B) Devise a simple test to determine when your solid product is actually dry.
C) calculate the amount (grams) of the unreacted reagent left in the solution after filtering off the solid. show all calculations.
D) Calculate the amount (grams) of the limiting reagent required to completely react with the unreacted reagent left in the solution.
Explanation / Answer
1) Experiment to determine which of these reagents is present in the filtrate
You have to take filtrate and test for Ca2+ and CO32-
test for Ca2+ ----- dissolve in acetic acid And add (NH4)2C2O4(Ammonium Oalate) . IF we are getting white ppt.(Ca2+ is left over . so we can tell CO32- is limiting agent
test for CO32- ------- If we add HCl to solution, and we are getting brisk effervesence, or any type of bubbles are coming then we can say CO3- is left over, so Ca2+ limiting agent
B) To check solid product is dry
add sodium to that solid product . If its not dry sodium will produce fire.
