Question
Only certain electron transitions are allowed from one energy level to another. In one-electron species, the change in the quantum number l of an allowed transition must be plusminus 1. For example, a 3p electron can drop directly to a 2s orbital but not to a 2p. Thus, in the UV series, where n_final = 1, allowed electron transitions can start in a p orbital (l = 1) of n = 2 or higher, not in an s (l = 0) or d (l = 2) orbital of n = 2 or higher. From what orbital do each of the allowed electron transitions start for the first four emission lines in the visible series (n_final = 2)? Check all of the allowed transitions:Explanation / Answer
l values for the different subshells can be written as follows.
l value : 0 , 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 .............
subshell: s, p, d, f, g, h, ............
In n = 2 there are two subshells they are 2s and 2p. so the transitions to these two subshells only allowed and change in l quantum number must be (+or-) 1.
hence allowed transitions in the visible series are
1) 3s ----> 2p delta l = 1-0 = +1
2) 3p ----> 2s delta l = 0-1 = -1
3) 3d ----> 2p delta l = 2-1 = +1
4) 4s ----> 2p delta l = 1-0 = +1
