Thermodynamics problem
Refer to the phase diagram of CO_2 on the backside of this page, answer the following questions. Write down the (P, T) coordinates for the Sublimation point, Triple point, and Critical point, and then estimate the heat of sublimation in J/mole and the heat of evaporation (Delta H ) in J/mole assuming that the two heats are independent of temperature. Estimate the heat of melting or latent heat in J/mole at the triple point, and the volume difference in m^3/mole between solid and liquid CO_2 near the triple point. Assuming that the CO_2 vapor can be modeled as a Van der Waals gas, calculate the two parameters, a and b, in its Equation of State (EOS) and briefly describe the physical origins of the two parameters.Explanation / Answer
At sublimation point, P = 1 atm and T = -78.5oC. So, (P,T) = (1, -78.5)
At Triple point, P = 5.11 atm and T = -56.6oC. So, (P,T) = (5.11, -56.6)
At Critical point, P = 80 atm and T = 28oC. So, (P,T) = (80, 28)
