(1) Why is CH CH CN more polar than CHaCH CH.CN? (2) Why is CH3CH2SCH3CH2 less polar than EtSH? (3) Suggest 3 ways to improve the separation of two compounds using column chromatography. (4) If compounds (X and Y) have R, values of 0.80 and 0.95, respectively, in 1:1 hexane.ethyl acetate in a TLC experiment, should you use a more polar or less polar solvent system to separate them using column chromatography (SiO2)? (5) Suggest a suitable mixture.

Explanation / Answer

1)

i am not sure about this answer i am guessing

2)

diethyl thio ether is a nuetral compound like diethyl ether

where as Ethane thiol is like a ethyl alcohol it can form hydrogen bonding also because of S-H bond it will be more polar.

4)

ideally any compound which is having 0.2 Rf at particular solvent system that can come out from the column

but here in 1:1 it showing the Rf 0.8 and 0.95 means both are close if pass this percentage you can not separate

both will come as mixture

you decrease the polarity of the solvent system until your to spot will become a 0.2 Rf then start the column with that percentage

one more thing pack the column little more langth than general column since spots are very close.

5)

according to mysuggesition start the column with 10 or 12 % isolate the first spot then increase to 50% because once you taken out your top spot you can increase your polarity how much you want.
