Question
Chocolate contains the caffeine-like stimulant theobromine which is the reason dogs can't have chocolate. Your 10 lb toy poodle ate the 45g chocolate bar you set aside for a post-studying snack. You do some quick research and luckily find a paper that has studied your exact chocolate bar! The table below summarizes the data found. You also determined that the LD50 (lethal dose for 50% of the population) is 300 mg/Kg. You're scared of course - but statistically should you be scared (is your dog likely to die from this)?Explanation / Answer
Solution:-
Lets first calculate the average mass percent of the theobromine in the chocolate
Average wt % = (1.3 +1.2+1.0+0.98+1.4)/5 = 1.176 %
now lets calculate the amount of the theorebromine present in 45 g chocolate
45 g chocolate * 1.176 % / 100 % = 0.5292 g theobromine
now lets convert gram to mg
0.5292 g * 1000 mg / 1 g = 529.2 mg theobromine
Now lets convert mass of dog from lb to kg
10 lb * 0.454 kg / 1 lb = 4.54 kg
now lets find dose per kg
529.2 mg / 4.54 kg = 116.6 mg/kg
So the amount of the theobromine ate by the dog is less than the lethal dose per kg so no need to be scared . dong wont die.
