Question
You are travelling through space and find a colony of fur balls on a planet. Some fur balls have eyes and others do not hav eyes. You notice two important things. First, the gene controlling development of eyes is linked to sex and that sex in fur balls is controlled in a smiliar manner to birds. Having no eyes (E) is dominant to having eyes (e)
a. if you had a male with no eyes what would be his genotype?
b. if you had a female with no eyes what would be her genotype?
c. if you ross the two fur balls in parts a and b together what would be the genotypes and phenotypes of the resulting F1 progeny?
I am guessing since it is similar to birds part a would be EE-ZZ and b would be ee-ZW but am not sure
Explanation / Answer
Answer:
a) EE
Explanation - In birds the ZW sex determination system determines sex. Males are homogametic (ZZ) while females are heterogametic (ZW). Z chromosome is larger than W and has more genes.
In this case as the subject is a male with no eyes and since sex in fur balls is controlled in a similar manner to birds so the male would be homogametic (EE).
b) Ee
Explanation - As the subject is a female with no eyes, its genotype would be heterogametic (Ee).
c) The cross between a and b would be -
EE * Ee
E e
E EE Ee
E EE Ee
Genotypes of F1 progeny - EE, EE, Ee, Ee
Phenotypes of F1 progeny - Males with no eyes (EE) and females with no eyes (Ee).
