2) a) The newborn with morphine withdrawal presents with central nervous system excitability, vasomotor signs and gastrointestinal signs.
b) The scoring system used to assess an infant with narcotic withdrawl are developed by Finnegan (1975, 1992) and later modified by Jansson in the year 2009. These tools called as Neonatal Abstinence Scoring (NAS) asses the signs of narcotic withdrawal. When scores are elevated, pharmacological treatment is given for the infant.
3) Supportive care is essential in the management of infants showing signs of morphine withdrawal. The suppportive care includes decreased stimulation, swaddling, frequent feedings on demand and intravenous fluids to maintain hydration.
