Chem 2 Experiment: Slightly Soluble Salts

Post lab question:

The method used for qualitative analysis deponds upond solubilbity of various salts containing the different ions. Using equations where appropriate, explain the following parts of the test:

a) Why do Group 1 cations form precipitats when mixed with HCl?

Group 1 cations include: Silver, Lead, Mercury

Answer: Is it because all of the group 1 cations form insoluble chlorides?

b) Why do Group 2 cations form precipitates when mixed with (NH4)HPO4?

Group 2 cations:Magnesium, Calcium, Barium

Answer: Is it because those cations all form insoluble phosphates?

Just want to make sure I am understanding this lab. I appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you!

Explanation / Answer

They form precipitates chlorides which are not soluble in acidic conditions, i.e.

Ag+ and Cl- --> AgCl(s)

Pb+2 and Cl--> PbCl2

Hg an dCl ---> HgCl2

b)

Mg+2, Ca+2 and Ba+2 are NOT soluble in basic conditions

NH4(HPO4) --> NH4+ and HPO4-

NH4+ ---> NH3 and H3O+

Magnesium, Calcium, Barium + OH --> Mg(OH)2, Ca(OH)2 and Ba(OH)2

technically speaking, their hydroxides are not soluble... their phosphate are
