Question
Can you pleased help me with the UNKOWN ONLY, I would like to get an idea if possible about this unkknow and what can I write for Observations of combustion based on the unknown? and I may need to balanced equation for combustion based on the unkown.
B. Combustion
Materials: Evaporating dish, wooden splints, matches unknowns
B. 1 Working in the hood, place 5 drops of cyclohexane on an evaporating dish. Using a lighted splint,
carefully ignite the sample. Repeat the combustion test with 5 drops of unknowns. Observe the flame and type of smoke produced by each. Record your observations.
Explanation / Answer
Looking at the known compound cyclohexane I would say you are going to compare hydrocarbons with and without the presence of any unsaturation. Now cyclohexane and the unknown is subjected to flame test. The unknown yields a higher intensity of flame and gives off a greater amount of soot when compared to cyclohexane.
Cyclohexane has a lower percentage of carbon in it when compared to say cyclohexene (lower hydrogen count gives higher percentage of carbon). Both of these burn or combust to produce CO2 and H2O. Since the percentage of carbon is higher in cyclohexene it produces more soot (related to % of carbon) and the intensity of flame is also greater than cyclohexane. If you see these changes you should be able to identify your unknown.
