Question
Consider the following chemical reaction: CuSO4 (s) + heat --> CuO (s) + SO3 (g) Design an experiment in which you use this chemical reaction to test the law of mass conservation Consider the following chemical reaction: CuSO4 (s) + heat --> CuO (s) + SO3 (g) Design an experiment in which you use this chemical reaction to test the law of mass conservation CuSO4 (s) + heat --> CuO (s) + SO3 (g) Design an experiment in which you use this chemical reaction to test the law of mass conservationExplanation / Answer
CuSO4 (s) + heat --> CuO (s) + SO3 (g)
1)weigh all the CuSO4 solid in an analytical balance
2) create a closed system. Add a balloon so the gas produced "grows". The balloon should be easy to calculate for its volume change
3) Burn th eCuSO4, expect the CuO to form in the solid stante and a gas will start filling the baloon (SO3)
4) Calculate the volume change... Apply ideal gas law
PV = nRT, or n = PV/(RT) and calculate the mass of SO3 produced
5) Wiegh the CuS in solid state
6) Add CuS mass + SO3 calculated mass, it should be the same (pretty the same)as the CuSO4 mass
