Question

Write the equation for each of the following reactions Construct a miniature activity series listing lead, zinc, hydrogen, potassium and silver in order of decreasing activity. a_ Zinc will react with Pb^2+ ions to form lead metal and Zn^2+ but Pb^2+ ions will not react with silver metal. Both zinc metal and lead metal will react with the H(ag) from HC1 to form hydrogen gas and Zn^2+. Lead reacts with HCI very slowly Silver metal will not react with HCI C Potassium react violently with cold water but the other metals do not react with cold water. d) Activity series.

Explanation / Answer

a. Zn(s) + Pb2+(aq) ---> Zn2+(aq) + Pb(s)

Ag(s) + Pb2+(aq) ---> No reaction

Zn is a better reductant than Ag for Pb. Zn is above Pb is the acitivty series but Pb is above Ag in the acitivty series.

b. Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) ---> ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g) ....slow

Pb(s) + 2HCl(aq) ----> PbCl2(aq) + H2(g) -----fast

Ag(s) + HCl(aq) ---> No reaction

Here again, Zn is a better reductant that is gets oxidized faster than Pb in the reaction with HCl. Ag is below in the series so no reaction.

c. 2K(s) + 2H2O(l) ---> 2KOH(aq) + H2(g)

Other metals + H2O(l) ---> No reaction

K is a more reactive metal as ccording to activity series.

d. Acitivty series : 1. K 2. Zn 3. Pb 4. H2 5. Ag
