Question

You are accidently left on mars and need to survive until a rescue mission arrives. Your immediate need is drinking water. You have to use chemistry to produce the water you need to survive. You have an unlimited supply of nitric acid, 74.0 kg of pure ion (mined from just beneath the Martian surface) and 50.0 kg pure hydrogen peroxide (rocket fuel) which was left in the jettisoned fuel tank from a previous Mars mission. Calculate the mass of water you can produce. If you require 2.5 L of water per day to survive, how long can you survive on the water you're able to produce? Show all your work and include an explanantion of each major step in the calculation.

Explanation / Answer

2Fe + 3H2O2(l) + ====> Fe2O3 + 3H2O(l)

74.0 kg of pure ion = 74000/ 55.85 = 1324 Mole

50.0 kg hydrogen peroxide = 54000/ 34.01 = 1587 Mole

hydrogen peroxide is limiting reagent which can produce 1587 Mole of water

                                                        = 1587 x 18 = 28,566 g or 28.57 Liter H2O will be produced

If you require 2.5 L of water per day to survive = 28.57/2.5 = 11.42 ~ 12 days can survive
