Question
- Below incorrect seperation scheme write a discussion of this incorrect schme identifying all of the mistakes in the seperation scheme. Keep in mind that there will be more than one mistake in the scheme.
-For each mistake, give a detailed, scientific explanation of why it is incorrect
On a page titled Correct seperation scheme print a correct separation scheme to isolate your molecule from the provided second molecule. Make sure to indicate the phase of each chemical in every step and write the separation technique used in each step. The list below gives the reagents available in the lab. Use any of the reagents below to isolate the compoundes.
10% aqueous NaOH
H_2_O
5% aqueous NaHCO_3
6M HCl
5%HCl
Diethyl ether
CH_3_OH
lithium aluminum hydride
H_3_PO_4
anhydrous Na_2_SO_4
anhydrousMgSO_4
saturated NaCl
NaBH_4
NaCl solid
my molecule 2,6-dimethyloct-2-ene
Explanation / Answer
when the mixture in diethylether was treated with 5% HCl, the species generated would be an ammonium salt and not an NH- species [First mistake]. the ammonium chloride species would be soluble in squeous phase and would go in water. The aqueous phase then needs to be treated with 10% NaOH(aq) to reprecipitate the amine from solution and not add another 6 M HCl [second mistake]. Rest all looks ok. The diethylether layer after drying over Na2SO4, filtration and evaporation of solvent would give the 2,6-dimethyloct-2-ene compound in pure form.
