Question
3 and 4 please Tell how each of the following experimental errors will affect your experimental results (yield, purity, or both), and explain why. (a) You failed to dry the product completely. (b) You used enough water to recrystallize phenacetin, but your unknown was acetanilide. (c) In the ''Extraction and Evaporation'' Experiment, you didn't extract all of the aspirin from the dichloromethane solution. 4. Tell whether each of the experimental errors in Exercise 3 will affect the melting point of the unknown component. If it will, tell how it will affect the melting point, and explain why.Explanation / Answer
3 (a) Drying the compound gives its exact yield(quantity that is obtained). But if we fail to dry properly it weighs more amount than it is due to the presence of water (wet condition) and also it is the pure form.
(b) The yield of acetanilide is too less as it is more soluble in water than phenacetin.
(c) Yield of aspirin will be less.
4)(a) Presence of water may decrease the melting point of as some amount vapours are formed by water
(b) Phenacetin melting poing(135 degree C)) is more than aspirin (114 degree C). So M.P. is decreased than we expect.
(c) Melting Point has no change as amount of substnce does not alter the melting point.
