Question
a cylinder with a moving piston expands from an initial volume of 0.350 L against an external pressure of 2.70 atm. The expansion does 347 J of work on the surroundings. What is the final volume of the cylinder? V=? a cylinder with a moving piston expands from an initial volume of 0.350 L against an external pressure of 2.70 atm. The expansion does 347 J of work on the surroundings. What is the final volume of the cylinder? V=? a cylinder with a moving piston expands from an initial volume of 0.350 L against an external pressure of 2.70 atm. The expansion does 347 J of work on the surroundings. What is the final volume of the cylinder? V=?Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
formual to calculate the work is
W= -P*Delta V
lets convert the work from 347 J to l atm
-347 J * 1 L atm / 101.3 J = -3.425 L atm
So now lets put the value of the work in the formula and calculate the final volume
-3.425 Latm = - 2.70 atm * ( V2-V1)
3.425 Latm = 2.70 atm * Delta V
3.425 L atm / 2.70 atm = 1.268 L
so the delta V = 1.268 L
So the final volume = 0.350 L + 1.268 L =1.62 L
So the final volume of the cylinder was 1.62 L
