Order the reactivity of the compounds evaluated in the "Effect of Solvent"
experiment? Were these results consistent with the expected results? Discuss
why your results were or were not in agreement with the expected results.
Effect of solvent
Trial one
Trial two
Silver nitrate (absolute)
Ppt formed at 0.04 seconds
Ppt formed at 0.05 seconds
Silver nitrate (5% ethanol)
Ppt formed at 0.039 seconds
Ppt formed at 0.037 seconds
Effect of solvent

Explanation / Answer
silver nitrate forms precipitate with halides
AgNO3 + X - --------------------------> AgX (ppt) + NO3-
here AgNO3 is not perfectly ionic compound. so there is covalent character between Ag+ and NO3-
inorder to form precipitate with halogen Ag -NO3 bond should be broken easily.
in pure (absolute) AgNO3 is taken there is not solvent interactions present in the AgNO3 there will be time taken to break AgNO3 bond so precipitation formation time is also high.
in case of ethanol AgNO3 there will be solvent AgNO3 interactions are present. so the bond Ag-NO3 broken easily and give precipitate easily that mean lesser time taken to precipitate
