Question
Calculate the enthalpy of the reaction 2NO(g) + o2(g) right arrow 2No2(g) given the following reactions and enthalpies of formation: 1/2N2(g) + o2(g) right arrow No2(g), deltaHA = 33.2kJ 1/2N2(g) + |o2(g) right arrow No(g), deltaHB= 90.2 kJ Calculate the enthalpy of the reaction 4B(s) + 3o2(g) right arrow 2B_2o3(s) given the following pertinent information: B_2 o3(s)+3H20(g)right arrow 302(g) + B_2H6(g), ), deltaHA = +2035kJ 2B(s) + 3H2 (g)right arrow B_2H6 (g), ), deltaHB =+36kJ H2(g) + iO2(g) right arrow H_2O), deltaHC= "285kJ H_2O(l) right arrow H_2O(g), ), deltaHD = +44 kJ Express your answer with the appropriate units.Explanation / Answer
1)
2NO + O2 --> 2NO2
1/2N2 + O2 --> NO2 H =33.2
1/2N2 + 1/2O2 --> NO H = 90.2
apply hess law:
invert (2)
1/2N2 + O2 --> NO2 H =33.2
NO -->1/2N2 + 1/2O2 H = -90.2
add both
1/2N2 + O2 + NO --> NO2 + 1/2N2 + 1/2O2 H = 33.2 -90.2 = -57
cancel common terms
1/2O2 + NO --> NO2 H = -57
Since we require twice, then multiplyby 2
2(1/2O2 + NO --> NO2) H = 2(-57)
O2 + 2NO -> 2NO2 H = -114 kJ
