Question

TLC PLATE:

So, I have a question regarding TLC plating. I need to be able to do a TLC plate of the folllowing recrystallized substances: Benzoic acid, salicylic acid, acetanilide, 2-napthol, aspirin, o-toluic acid, m-toluic acid, and cinnamic acid. That being said, these will be in the solid state since they were just recrystallized. Therefore, I need help determining what solute to use to allow them to become liquids and therefore spotted on a TLC. Also, guiding me through choice of solvent for the TLC wouldn't hurt either :)

Explanation / Answer

The solvent to dissolve all the compounds is acetone. Make a dilute solution of each and developing solvent has to be very polar in this case. Use combination of MeOH : Acetone, MeOH : CH2Cl2. You really have to try couple of solvents to see which gives the best separation.
