Question
When NaHCO_3 is heated above 270 Degree C, it decomposes to Na2C03, H2O, and CO2. Write a balanced chemical equation for the decomposition reaction. Do not include phases. Calculate the mass of CO2 produced from the decomposition of 40.0 g of NaHCO_3. Tip: When entering balanced chemical equations, place coefficients directly in front of the compound, leaving no spaces. Plus signs (+) can be typed from the keyboard. Use the left and right arrow keys to move the cursor out of a superscript or subscript in the module. Reaction arrows can be found in the Tools menu of the answer module.Explanation / Answer
the reeaction (balanced)
2 NaHCO3 (s) -- -> Na2CO3 (s) + H2O(g) + CO2 (g)
if m 0 40 g of NaHCO3 decomposses
then
mol = mass/MW = 40/84.007 = 0.476150 mol of NaHCO3 decomposes
ratio is 2 mol of NaHCO3 per 1 mol of CO2
then
0.476150/2 = 0.238075 mol of CO2 will be produced
mass = mol*MW = 0.238075*44 = 10.4753 g of CO2 will be produced
