Question

When NaHCO_3 is heated above 270 degree C, it decomposes to Na_2CO_3, H_2O, and CO_2. Write a balanced chemical equation for the decomposition reaction. Do not include phases. Calculate the mass of CO_2 produced from the decomposition of 24.0 g of NaHCO_3. Tip: When entering balanced chemical equations, place coefficients directly in front of the compound, leaving no spaces. Plus signs can be typed from the keyboard. Use the left and rightarrow keys to move the cursor out of a superscript or subscript in the module. Reaction arrows can be found in the Tools menu of the answer module.

Explanation / Answer

NaHCO3 ----> Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2

Balanced equation-

2NaHCO3 ----> Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2

So, 2Na,2H,2C and 6O on both sides.

Now, 2moles of NaHCO3 produce 1 mol of CO2

Molar mass of NaHCO3 = 84g/mol

Molar mass of CO2 = 44g/mol

So, 2*84g of NaHCO3 produce 44g of CO2

So,24g of NaHCO3 produce (44g/2*84)*24g of CO2 = 6.29g of CO2
