Question
A student came late to the laboratory, and she was rushing to complete this experiment, in her haste, she mixed the HCI and Na_2SO_4 solutions together in a test tube before adding them to a sample of her unknown (Part V). Describe the problem she might have had in identifying the cations in her unknown. A student was given an unknown solution and told that it contained either chloride ion (Cl^-) or sulfate ion (SO_4^2-), or both. The student was also told that PbCI_2 is insoluble in 3 NaC_2H_3O2. Using the test solutions from this experiment, devise a procedure the student could use to determine which an-ion(s) is/are present in the unknown.Explanation / Answer
2. As she mixed the sample unknown and HCl + Na2SO4 ; she unable to find if her sample unknown has any sodium salt. I mean that she can't find the Na+ (cation) if it were in her test sample.
