Question
) A lake contains organic material with a fulvic acid (FA) concentration of 1000 ug/l and a nickel of 10 ug/liter.
(i) Calculate the concentrations of Fa sites and of Ni in moles or milli moles or micro moles per liter
(ii.) Write the reaction, set up the equilibrium, and show the changes that occur upon reaction.
(iii.) Given the K for FA below what species do you see as being in low or very low concentration?
(iv.) Calculate the concentration of FaNi in u mol/l. data is below Note that the Keq is large value not small.
(FA has 5 m mol/gm (0.005) of acid groups that can bind with a metal, and the Ksb for FA + Ni = FaNi is 1.6 x 104 (16000.)
Explanation / Answer
MM of FA = 308.24 g/mol; MM of Ni = 58.69 g/mol
i). [FA] = 1000x10-6 g/L * 1 mol / 308.24 g = 3.24x10-6 mol/L or 3.24 umol/L
[Ni] = 10x10-6 g/L * 1 mol/58.69 g = 1.704x10-7 mol/L or 0.1704 umol/L
ii). FA + Ni ---------> FANi
i. 3.24 0.17 0
e. 3.24-x 0.17-x x
K = x / (3.24-x)(0.17-x)
Hope this helps. I 'll edit my answer when I solved iii) and iv).
