Question
Nitrogen triiodide (Nl_3) is an explosive molecular solid that decomposes into gaseous iodine (I_2) and nitrogen (N_2) upon mechanical impact (i.e. touching with a feather!) Write a balanced reaction for the decomposition of Nl_3. A 200 mL closed steel container with 10.0 g of NI_3 was mechanically shaken to produce an explosion (VERY BAD IDEA!). What is the expected final pressure in atm in the container after the explosion knowing that the initial pressure in the container due to air was 750 torr. Assume that the gases behave ideally and that the initial gaseous air does not react with the final products. Also assume that the temperature remains at 30 degree C throughout the entire reaction.Explanation / Answer
Molecular weight of NI3= 395
Moles of NI3 in 10gm = 10/395=0.02532 moles
As per the reaction, 2 moles of NI3 gives 4 moles of product ( 3 moles of I2 and 1 mole of N2)
0.02532 moles of NI3 gives 0.02532*4/2 =0.05064 mumoles
Volume , V =200 ml =200/1000 L= 0.2 L (since the vessel is closed container, the volume remains the same even after the reaction)
T =30 deg.c =30+273.15= 303.15, R =0.08206 L.atm/mole.K
from PV= nRT
P= nRT/V= 0.05064*0.08206* 303.15/ 0.2=6.3 atm =6.3*760 torr=4788 torr
