Question
The following questions are for the dehydration of cyclohexanol. (MW = molecular weight) Starting with 1.20 g of cyclohexanol, what is the theoretical yield of cyclohexene in mol (do not add the units to these answers)? What is the theoretical yield in g? The amount of product obtained after the final distillation is 0.688. Assuming that the distillate is pure cyclohexene, what is the % yield of product? If gas chromatography of the distillate showed that the purity of product was 0.780, what is the % yield of pure cyclohexene?Explanation / Answer
from the reaction there is a 1:1 molar ratio between cyclohexanol and cyclohexene.
therefore for 1 mole of cyclohexanol we get 1 mole of cyclohexene.
moles of cyclohexanol used = 1.2/100.2 = 0.1198 mol
therefore yield of cyclohexene in mole = 0.1198 mol
yield in grams = 0.1198 * 82.1 = 9.83 grams
if actual yield = 0.688 grams
then %yield = (0.688/9.83)*100 = 6.99%
if only 78% of the distillate is pure then actual yield = 0.688 * 0.78 = 0.53664
then %yield = (0.53664/9.83)*100 = 5.46%
